The New Zealand International Convention Centre (NZICC) has reached a key milestone as SkyCity Entertainment Group officially takes possession of the venue. Commissioning work is now underway, focusing on the final fit-out, systems testing and staff training ahead of the centre’s scheduled opening in February 2026.
A formal blessing of the building was conducted yesterday by Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei, the tangata whenua of central Tāmaki Makaurau. The kawanga whare ceremony, held before dawn, lifted elements of tapu (sacredness) and set intentions for the building and its future use, while acknowledging the connection between people and place.
Located in Auckland’s city centre, the NZ$750 million development is designed to reshape New Zealand’s business events sector. The purpose-built facility will accommodate more than 4,000 delegates across flexible spaces suitable for international summits, trade exhibitions, concerts and smaller meetings.
“Today marks years of collaboration, craftsmanship and vision,” Prue Daly, general manager of NZICC, said. “The countdown to February is on, and we can’t wait to welcome our first guests. With over 100 events already confirmed for 2026, we’re off to a fantastic start.”
The NZICC is expected to attract around 33,000 international delegates annually, generating an estimated NZ$90 million in new economic activity each year. Its vertically stacked design aims to provide smooth transitions between meeting, exhibition and performance areas.
Architectural firms Warren and Mahoney, Moller Architects and Woods Bagot collaborated on the project. John Coop, managing director at Warren and Mahoney, said. “This milestone reflects years of work by many teams. The centre has been designed to showcase New Zealand on the global stage and revitalise a key part of Auckland’s urban landscape.”
The NZICC will be the only convention centre in the country to carry the FernMark, signifying its role in representing New Zealand internationally.
